Nishikigoi

Nishikigoi is the Japanese term for the fish called “Colored carp”.

Nishikigoi (Colored carp) is the cultured variety of the normal carp fish for aquarium use.
It is highly popular in the foreign countries also, and is called as Koi, same as that of the Japanese language.
 









The cultivation of the colored carp was started in Niigata Prefecture, and in this region the black carp was kept for food, but the red colored carp was born by chance through mutation.
The red should have been strikingly rich for the farmers who are living in the snowy mountain village. They carefully set aside the red carp, multiplied it and created more vivid colored carp. It is a birth of the swimming gem and colored carp. The colored carp was not known much within Japan until the 1900's, but now nearly 80% of the turnover is exported to foreign countries, and has created fans all over the world.
 




The carp, that was the champion at the fair, rarely appeared in the market, and in case it appears in the market, it was not unusual to have the business of more than 10 million Japanese Yen (US$100,000) for 1 fish.
 




Precisely, it is a swimming gem.
 

A healthy colored carp is said to have a life span of 50~70 years
 



The record for the longest life span of carp confirmed in Japan, bred in the pond at Higashishirakawa village, at the Gifu Prefecture, was the “Hanako”, a red carp that is said to have born in the year 1751 and lived for 226 years
